Diary of a Cancelled Flight: Istanbul to Newark
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Our traveling "karma" has gone ca-ca in 2013. A January cancelled flight required an overnight in Tokyo, and three short months later, a cancelled flight required an overnight in Istanbul. At least procedures in Tokyo were orderly which could not be said for Istanbul where utter chaos prevailed. None of the passengers knew what was happening; personnel led passengers in scattered groups through huge Ataturk Airport where the "flock" got separated, leading to mass confusion and stress overload. If I hadn't been afraid of ending up in a Turkish prison, I would have loved to video the entire "whose on first...." scene with authorities...."Go to that line...no-no, you are in the wrong line...I don't know, ask someone else...." The grand culmination, once we reached Newark Airport, was another 3-1/2 hour delay thanks to Airport Ground Control who anticipated massive thunderstorms over the Midwest. And, if you are really interested, the "mechanical" delay in Istanbul was caused by lightening which hit the plane's wings, followed by crew timing out. Isn't is always something?- published: 10 Apr 2013

Chicago-Beijing Round Trip United Airlines 777-222 Business Class
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com We left Chicago O'Hare International Airport on a bitterly cold day in January (when isn't January cold in Chicago), bound for Beijing with a connection onwards to Delhi. The revamped 777-222 or 777-200(ER) has better fuel capacity, can carry more weight and has a longer range than the 777-200. This trip to India replaced our ill-fated trip in February, 2013 when I forgot my 10-year India Visa back home in the expired passport - not a happy story; commiserate by reading "Travel Insurance Does Not Cover Stupidity" on travelswithsheila (add the .com). Global upgrades to Business Class came through months ago and we were off on a long, almost half way around the world trip. Will someone please whack me aside the head if I ever order beef on United Airlines again? Why do I persist in thinking it will taste better than the last time?- published: 27 Feb 2014

A Fast Walking Tour of Skopje, MacedoniaL Part 2
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Our tour of Skopje led from the old Turkish area across the Stone Bridge, down the still pedestrian area and past magnificent sculptures and fountains of King Philip I! of Macedonia, his fourth wife Olympias and their son, Alexander the Great. (Goran said the fountains dance at night and turn colors.) Although I've always thought of Mother Theresa as Albanian, she was born in Skopje and a monstrosity of a house that cost millions of Euro commemorates her life but behind this house is a smaller shrine that fits her deeds and self-sacrifice in a more meaningful way. Keep on going past a host of restaurants, bars and stores to the old train station; destroyed in the 1963 earthquake, it remains as a memorial to the victims.- published: 07 Oct 2013

Welcome to Taipei! Astonishing Hsing Tien King Worship Temple
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Hsing Tien King Worship Temple, also called Xingtian Temple, was only two blocks from The Landis Hotel and what a sight it was. Not the temple itself but the throngs of people entering, leaving, carrying offerings, women selling offerings on all four street corners and that was just the outside. The temple is reputedly packed jowl-to-jowl on weekends with lines stretching to the street. Inside, supplicants waited patiently in long lines for their turn to approach one of the blue-robed women who then waved a joss stick over their body! Not only is this temple dedicated to Guanngong, a famous red-faced general who is known as the God of War and God of Business but also supposed to cure ailments. When an ailing person couldn't come to the temple in person, a family member would bring an article of their clothing. An amazing sight! The Landis Hotel Manager told me it wasn't necessary to speak Chinese when I moaned how I would have liked to have my stomach ailments cured. He said, "Just get in line and let the women do their healing magic."- published: 26 Nov 2013

Hiking or Biking on The Zwolferkogel in Hinterglemm, Austria
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The Zwolferkogel Mountain in Hinterglemm (down the road from Saalbach) happens to be one of my favorite hiking areas as well as of mountain bikers. A cable car lead to the middle and then continues to the top where in winter, chair lifts spread out in all directions. The only bad feature, if anything in Austria can have a bad feature, is the entire mountain is above tree line. Why bad? Austria was suffering through a brutal heat spell - 35 degrees Celsius/95 degrees Fahrenheit, and with no shade, schvitz (sweat) was flying in all directions. It truly was a "Climb Every Mountain Day..." and how wonderful to relax at the top, watch children playing and people relaxing in lounge chairs; catching rays and drinking a cold beer. And then, the free with Joker Card cable car down. How enjoyable and easy is that...- published: 12 Aug 2013
